Common Core Standards
In 2010 Illinois adopted rigorous new learning standards that are now being implemented across the state. The goal of the new standards is to increase Illinois students' preparation for success in college and the workplace in a competitive, global economy. ISBE offers this rationale for the new standards:
- Our expectations for what students must know and be able to demonstrate are different in 1997 when Illinois adopted the prior standards.
- The new standards aim to provide clear, consistent academic benchmarks with fewer, clearer, and higher academic standards for essential learning and skills. The 2010 standards reflect standards of top performing countries.
- The 2010 state standards provide benchmarks for academic progress (skills and knowledge) that students should have at the conclusion of each grade level.
- Students and parents will clearly understand the knowledge students are expected to attain each year.
The 2010 Common Core State Standards cover the following subjects:
Science and Social Studies standards are now being developed. New assessments aligned with the 2010 standards will begin in fall 2014. See About the Tests for information.
